Blossom Cafe

Blossom Cafe uses a combination of imported ingredients, regional seafood and seasonal Lowcountry produce. These items are prepared with cooking techniques very similar to authentic Italian/Mediterranean methods, such as creating breads, desserts and pastas in an in-house bakery and using a traditional woodburning oven. Blossom will truly make your tastebuds "blossom". Blossom's woodburning oven is perfect for their unusual ingredient pizzas.

I visited Blossom Cafe on my last visit to Charleston. (August 9th, 2001) I had eaten here a couple times before when I used to live in Charleston, and had my heart set on the gnocchi. We arrived at Blossom around 3 in the afternoon and the restaurant had very few guests. There appeared to be a couple tourists at the bar laughing it up with the very seemingly friendly bartender.

We were sat, and greeted almost immediately by our server, Jeff. While I was looking over the menu, Jeff presented Blossom's wine menu to me, and made a few of his own suggestions, one of which I took. I had the Chardonnay he recommended, only after I told him I wanted a chardonnay without a rich oak taste. I like mine with more of a vanilla flair. He left the table and returned with a sample for me to taste before I made my decision, and it was just as I had asked for. Jeff seemed more knowledgeable than most servers that I've had lately, and I found out later why, Jeff attends the Johnson and Wales culinary school, located in Charleston.

Jeff was a fantastic server, and made very convincing suggestions to us on the menu. Jeff returned promptly with my full glass of wine, and a homemade loaf of bread that was pre-sliced in a warm basket. He poured olive oil and grated fresh parmesan cheese onto our own individual bread plates, so that we could dip our bread in. With my heart still set on the gnocchi I had remembered in days gone by, Jeff informed me that they no longer served the gnocchi in the brown butter sauce I so desperately craved, but he assured me the new way the prepared it was just as good if not better. Reluctantly, I took his word for it. The gnocchi appetizer now is a potato parmesan gnocchi in a marsala cream sauce w/veal tips, wild mushroom, roasted garlic, sage and oregano. Needless to say, it was better than I could've imagined. Thank goodness there weren't a lot of people in there, because I cleaned my bowl so clean, you would've thought they had set a clean one in front of me. We also tried the spinach dip, which if you've read a lot of my reviews, you can see that if that's an option on the menu, chances are, it's going in a review. The dip was very good, loaded with spinach, and a healthy portion. The spinach dip is served hot with foccai bread.

I'm giving Blossom Cafe 5 stars, and recommending This restaurant as a DON'T MISS while you're in downtown Charleston. The food was of 5 star status, and the service there is among some of the best in Charleston. It's a great casual relaxed atmosphere. Ask for Jeff, and tell him you read his review on ComeToCharleston.com.
